Amitava Majumdar a.k.a. “Raja” is the Managing Partner of our firm and has over two decades experience in the industry. He was instrumental in setting up Bose & Mitra & Co, Mumbai in the year 2004 (a spin-off of an 85 year old firm – Bose & Mitra, Kolkata) which over the past 15 years has grown to become one of India’s largest boutique shipping law firms. Mr. Majumdar plays an active role in advising the Government of India on revamping domestic Indian legislation to keep in sync with international conventions and has on numerous occasions represented India as a delegate in Legal Committee Meetings of the IMO. He is part of the Maritime Committee of the Indian Council of Arbitration and a member of the Governing Counsel of the Singapore Chamber of Maritime Arbitration.

Mr. Majumdar’s expertise encapsulates all facets in shipping and trade which inter alia includes contentious and non-contentious/regulatory practice. Additionally he has been involved in a number of wet matters in India including but not limited to the MT Genessa, MV Amber L, MV Prabhu Daya, MSC Chitra – MV Khalija-1 and MV Den Den casualties. He has appeared before Courts all across India and arbitrations in India and abroad. He proffered expert evidence on Indian law and Indian civil procedure before the English High Court in the matter of Ultrabulk A/S v Arun Kumar Jagatramka [2017] EWHC 2792 (Comm) and The Jag Ravi [2011] EWHC 1372 (Comm) in addition to proceedings before the Singaporean Courts.

Prior to his stint at Bose & Mitra, Kolkata, Mr. Majumdar worked at the North of England P&I Club at Newcastle, UK and was a pupil to Mr. Brian Dye. Mr. Majumdar is one of the foremost Indian practitioners in ship sale and purchase transactions and regularly represents Indian shipowners in closings Singapore, London, Hong Kong, Greece, Italy, United States of America, Dubai, Hamburg, Bulgaria, Japan for various types of vessel.
