Damayanti joined the firm in 2016. She holds a B.B.A LL.B (Hons.) degree in International Law from the National Law University Odisha and has been enrolled with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa since 2015.
Damayanti appears before various High Courts in India and in arbitrations in various commercial matters of shipping and trade, including core issues of admiralty law and practice. She has worked closely with the Greek and the European markets. She mainly acts on behalf of owners and P&I Clubs and handles a broad range of P&I, FDD, Admiralty and international trade matters, with her main focus on charters and bills of lading. She frequently advises on court auctions of vessels and is well versed with bunker and charterparty disputes. She is involved in a number of actions involving enforcement and execution of foreign awards. Damayanti also specialises in shipping taxation disputes and heads the taxation department of the firm.
Damayanti also works with energy and commodity companies, banks, and exchanges on a variety of transactional, cross-border regulatory, compliance and risk management matters within the energy and commodities sector. She has a wide range of experience (on both contentious and non-contentious issues) in the international trade and commodities sector, covering trading, the sale of goods, transportation, financing and warehousing of many physical commodities. Damayanti has dealt with live, time sensitive disputes and has advised on commercial agreements, including parent company guarantees, agency agreements and payment mechanisms, such as standby and documentary letters of credit. Damayanti also acts on transactional matters involving drafting and advising onstructured financing matters, contracts and transaction structures relating to a broad spectrum of commodities from metals to grain, to oils. In terms of regulatory work she has substantial experience in assisting clients with their compliance policy documents and applications for authorisations for non IG insurers, having worked closely with the Directorate General of Shipping on various issues.
